Montgomery, AL (BuzzReport) – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Driver License Division has announced significant updates that will impact Commercial Driver License (CDL) holders and applicants across the state starting in 2025. The changes, aimed at bolstering road safety and streamlining certification processes, are in line with federal regulations and industry best practices. The two major changes involve the submission of DOT medical certifications and a modernization of the CDL skills test. Both are expected to enhance the overall safety and competence of commercial drivers in Alabama. Electronic DOT Medical Certification Submission Becomes Mandatory in June 2025 Starting June 23, 2025, in compliance with National Registry II and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) guidelines, ALEA will exclusively accept DOT medical certifications through electronic submissions from authorized medical providers. This marks a significant shift from current practices. “This change is a crucial step in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of medical certification records for CDL holders,” stated an ALEA spokesperson. “By moving to an electronic system, we can better track medical qualifications and ensure that drivers meet the necessary health standards to operate commercial vehicles safely.” What CDL Holders Need to Know: No More Paper: Paper medical cards and online uploads will no longer be accepted after June 23, 2025. Review Your Status Online:CDL holders are urged to review or update their DOT medical card or self-certification information by visiting www.alabamadl.alea.gov and clicking on the “Commercial Drivers” tab. Verify Your Self-Certification: Ensure your self-certification category is accurate. Use the “Submit Self-Certification” option under the “Actions” tab to make any necessary changes. Contact Your Examiner: If your DOT Medical Card information is missing or incorrect, contact your medical examiner immediately. Modernized CDL Skills Test Rolling Out in July 2025 Effective July 1, 2025, ALEA will implement the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) Modernized Version of the CDL Skills Test. This updated test includes substantial revisions to the Vehicle Inspection (VI) and Basic Control Skills (BCS) portions, while the Road Skills portion will remain unchanged. Changes to the Skills Test: Vehicle Inspection (VI): The revised VI section streamlines the process by removing redundant steps and focusing on safety-critical components. It also incorporates updated terminology and test items to reflect advancements in commercial vehicle technology. Basic Control Skills (BCS):The BCS test will now feature four maneuvers, including the introduction of the Forward Stop and Forward Offset Tracking exercises. These new additions are driven by crash data highlighting a high prevalence of frontal impacts and side swipes involving commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). The updated maneuvers are designed to more accurately assess a driver’s ability to control a vehicle under realistic conditions. ALEA officials emphasize that these changes are intended to improve the quality and effectiveness of CDL training and testing. “By modernizing our skills test, we are ensuring that newly licensed CDL drivers possess the necessary skills and knowledge to operate commercial vehicles safely and responsibly,” the spokesperson added. CDL holders and applicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these upcoming changes and take the necessary steps to ensure compliance before the effective dates in 2025.
