Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – Helen Wright, a former longtime city employee and dedicated resident of Prichard, has officially declared her candidacy for Mayor as the city prepares for a municipal election in just over 90 days. With an extensive background in community development, public works, and grants management during her 14 years with the city, Wright believes her experience has equipped her to revive a city she deeply loves, which she believes is in urgent need of transformation. As the race heats up, Wright emphasizes her desire for change in Prichard. “It’s time to stop good people in the city from being taken advantage of. The city is a depressed area, and it’s time to breathe new life into our beloved community,” she stated in an interview. Wright’s vision includes addressing key issues that have long plagued the city, including blight, a dysfunctional police and fire department, a lack of business opportunities, and a dwindling tax base. “It’s time for new businesses and more jobs in Prichard, and I’m committed to turning our city around,” she asserted. A critical component of her campaign is her proposal for improving relationships with local utilities. “We need to build a working relationship with the water board to reduce citizens’ bills,” Wright said. She proposes establishing a five-member board elected by the people of Prichard to oversee necessary repairs to the water system. On police reform, Wright suggests a complete overhaul of the police department. “The police department should be totally revised. We need a department that is community-focused, tough on crime, and operates with transparency,” she remarked. Additionally, she supports implementing traffic cameras to enhance public safety and enforce traffic regulations. Wright also sees potential in revitalizing Prichard’s recreational facilities. She believes the golf course in Eight Mile and the stadium in the city’s heart could become economic engines for the community with necessary repairs and marketing efforts. As Prichard continues to grapple with poverty and a lagging tax base, Wright stresses the importance of creating incentives to attract new businesses. “As the second largest city in Mobile County, we have a significant opportunity to grow our tax base to support the city,” she explained. Wright joins a growing list of candidates vying for the mayoral seat. Current Mayor Jimmy Gardner, former Councilman Lorenzo Martin, community advocate Carletta Davis, former court officer Anthony Clarkbanks, Wave Transit employee Terrence Harris, and former chief of staff Rodney Clements have all declared their candidacies. As the election date of August 26th approaches, candidates will need to address the pressing challenges facing the city. Whomever is elected will confront a full agenda and high expectations from Prichard residents seeking solutions and a brighter future for their community.
