MOBILE, AL (BuzzReport) – A recent report from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has recommended that the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) maintain the closure of Big Creek Lake to recreational use. The April 2025 report cites concerns over the introduction of invasive species and potential security risks to critical infrastructure as the basis for its recommendation. MAWSS initially closed the lake in July 2021 after discovering the invasive Giant Salvinia species, which is believed to have been introduced by boats. The closure has been in place ever since. A community group, Take Big Creek Lake Back, continues to advocate for the lake’s reopening. The group’s efforts are ongoing, despite the DHS report’s recommendation to keep the lake closed.
