Two Victims Identified After Deadly Amtrak Train Collision In Mobile

Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) — Two people have been identified following a deadly collision involving an Amtrak passenger train and a vehicle at a railroad crossing in Mobile Thursday morning.

The Mobile Police Department said the crash happened shortly before 11 a.m. on September 24 at the Bellingrath Road crossing near Peary Road. Investigators said an Amtrak Mardi Gras Service train traveling toward Mobile struck a vehicle that was on or near the railroad tracks.

The impact was severe, leaving approximately half of the vehicle alongside the railroad tracks. Police said the crossing arms were down at the time of the collision.

The two occupants of the vehicle, identified as Suzanne O’Shea and James Cobb, were killed in the crash.

Emergency crews responded to the scene as authorities secured the area and began working to determine the circumstances that led to the vehicle being on the tracks as the train approached.

At this time, authorities have not released an explanation for why the vehicle was on the railroad tracks while an Amtrak train was approaching. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details could be released as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The deadly crash also serves as a reminder of the serious dangers associated with railroad crossings. Drivers are urged to obey crossing signals and gates, stop when required, and never attempt to drive around lowered crossing arms. A moving train can take a significant distance to stop, making any attempt to cross in front of an approaching train extremely dangerous.
