George County Deputies Arrest Mobile Woman Following Property Damage, Arson and Animal Cruelty Investigation

LUCEDALE, Miss. (BuzzReport) — A 55-year-old Mobile, Alabama, woman is facing multiple criminal charges following an investigation into alleged property damage, arson and animal cruelty in George County.

According to the George County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the Basin community on August 14, 2026, after receiving a report that a woman was allegedly damaging and burning property belonging to a homeowner.

Deputies identified the suspect as Maria Lewis, 55, of Mobile, Alabama.

Investigators determined that Lewis had been staying at the residence and was in the process of being evicted by the homeowner when the alleged incident occurred.

Authorities said the investigation revealed that Lewis allegedly caused several thousand dollars in damage to the homeowner’s property. Investigators also determined that some of the homeowner’s belongings were allegedly set on fire.

The investigation took an additional turn when authorities learned of allegations involving an animal.

According to investigators, Lewis allegedly placed her small dog inside a carrier and left the animal in nearby woods without food or water. The dog was reportedly discovered by a neighbor the following day.

The neighbor’s discovery of the animal prompted further concern about the dog’s welfare and became part of the criminal investigation.

Lewis was arrested and initially charged with Felony Malicious Mischief and Felony Arson, 3rd Degree. She was later additionally charged with Simple Cruelty to Animals, a misdemeanor.

Lewis appeared before Justice Court Judge Mike Bullock, who set bond at $20,000 on the malicious mischief charge and $25,000 on the third-degree arson charge.

George County Sheriff Mitchell Mixon said the case demonstrates the department’s commitment to investigating allegations involving property crimes, fires and the mistreatment of animals.

“This incident is a reminder that we will take allegations of criminal damage, arson, and animal cruelty seriously,” Mixon said. “Our deputies and investigators worked to identify the circumstances surrounding this incident and hold the appropriate person accountable.”

Mixon also expressed appreciation to the neighbor who discovered the dog and intervened.

“We are also thankful that the animal was discovered and that a neighbor took action to ensure its safety,” the sheriff said.

The case remains under investigation, and the charges against Lewis will now proceed through the criminal justice system.
