Former Faith Academy Teacher and Coach Agrees to Plead Guilty in Student Sex Case

Mobile, AL (BuzzReport)—A former Faith Academy teacher and soccer coach has agreed to plead guilty to charges stemming from allegations that he engaged in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student while working at the Mobile-area private school.

Jonathan Daniels Sauers, 47, was indicted by a grand jury under an Alabama law that makes it a criminal offense for certain school employees to engage in sexual activity with students. Sauers was working as a science teacher and soccer coach at Faith Academy in 2023 when concerns surfaced about his alleged inappropriate relationship with the student.

The case came to the attention of authorities after the teenager’s parents reported her missing when she failed to return home from a trip to the Semmes Walmart to purchase school supplies.

According to the information surrounding the investigation, the parents located their daughter’s vehicle but could not find her. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance ultimately prompted an investigation that uncovered allegations involving Sauers.

Sauers is scheduled to appear in court in September, when a judge is expected to formally accept his guilty plea. The hearing will mark a significant development in a case that began with a missing-person report and evolved into a criminal investigation involving a former educator and a student.

The investigation also resulted in criminal charges against Carrie Meredith, who was serving as a guidance counselor at Faith Academy at the time.

Meredith was accused of failing to fulfill her responsibilities as a mandatory reporter after information surfaced suggesting there could be an inappropriate relationship between Sauers and the student.

According to the case, a friend of the victim reportedly told Meredith that she had been informed the girl had photographs of Sauers on her phone. Rather than the information immediately resulting in a report to authorities, the matter later became part of the investigation into whether Meredith had failed in her legal obligation to report suspected abuse or misconduct.

A jury found Meredith guilty in June of failing to fulfill her responsibilities as a mandatory reporter.

Mobile County Presiding Circuit Judge Wesley Pipes subsequently sentenced Meredith to six months, with the sentence suspended. She was placed on six months of probation and ordered to pay a $500 fine.

The cases highlight the serious legal and ethical responsibilities placed on school employees when concerns arise involving potential sexual misconduct between educators and students.

For Sauers, the upcoming September hearing is expected to formally address the guilty plea and move the criminal case toward sentencing.

Until the court proceedings are completed, the allegations against Sauers remain allegations, and the ultimate disposition of the case will be determined by the court.
