Largest Child Exploitation Seizure in Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office History Under Investigation

Baldwin County, AL (BuzzReport)— Investigators with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office say they have uncovered what is believed to be the largest seizure of child sexual abuse material in the agency’s history following an investigation into 27-year-old Douglas Smith.

Authorities say investigators seized Smith’s cell phones, computer and other electronic devices as part of an investigation prompted by multiple cyber tips received through the Internet Crimes Against Children task force.

The sheer volume of digital evidence recovered has stunned investigators. According to the Sheriff’s Office, authorities identified approximately 60 terabytes of digital evidence, an amount they estimate is equivalent to roughly 20 million images.

Investigators say the case began after receiving multiple tips involving suspected online activity. Smith was stopped in Robertsdale earlier this week as investigators moved forward with the investigation.

Authorities allege that Smith made contact with victims through online video gaming platforms. Investigators are continuing to examine the seized devices and digital evidence as they work to determine the full scope of the alleged activity and identify any additional victims.

The investigation highlights the growing concern among law enforcement agencies about predators using gaming platforms and other online communities to establish contact with children.

Smith is currently being held on a $200,000 bond. If released, authorities say he would face strict conditions, including house arrest and GPS electronic monitoring.

He would also be prohibited from having contact with his alleged victims, any minors, or electronic devices capable of accessing the internet.

Because the investigation remains active, authorities have not released additional details about the alleged victims or the specific content recovered from the devices.

Investigators say the enormous amount of digital evidence could take significant time to fully process. The examination is expected to play a critical role in determining whether additional charges or arrests could follow.
