Democrat Clyde Jones Responds After Alabama’s 1st Congressional District Special Primary

DAPHNE, Ala. (BuzzReport) — Alabama’s 1st Congressional District is headed toward another high-stakes election battle, with Democrat Clyde Jones officially turning his attention to the November general election after Republicans selected their nominee in a special primary.

Jones, the Democratic nominee for the newly configured district, issued a statement following the election, welcoming his Republican opponent and calling for voters to have an opportunity to hear directly from both candidates before casting their ballots.

“After a long election season filled with confusion and voided votes due to a mid-season redistricting, the Republican Party has finally selected their candidate for Congressional District 1,” Jones said.

Jones went on to welcome his opponent to the general election, scheduled for November 3, 2026, and introduced himself to voters who may not yet be familiar with his background.

The Democratic candidate says he is a U.S. Army veteran who served for 21 years and a reverend involved in both faith and activism.

Jones said his campaign is focused on offering voters what he described as “a clear choice and a different path for America” as the two candidates prepare for the November contest.

Among the issues Jones highlighted are immigration policy, healthcare, affordability, education, veterans’ services and protecting the rights of American citizens.

“I am running to take back Congress and to proudly serve all of my constituents no matter who you vote for as a member of a co-equal branch of government,” Jones said.

Jones also challenged his Republican opponent, Jerry Carl, to participate in at least one public debate before the election.

The Democrat said voters deserve to hear where both candidates stand on the issues affecting the district and the country before making their decision.

“Our constituents deserve to know our positions on the issues,” Jones said. “I am challenging Mr. Carl to at least one debate, if not more. Let the voters hear from us and make an informed choice when they vote for their representative in November.”

The call for debates comes as the newly redrawn 1st Congressional District enters its next phase following a special election process marked by redistricting and changes to the district’s political boundaries.

The special primary also drew attention because of voter participation. Turnout was relatively low, despite the significance of the election and efforts by political organizations to mobilize voters.

The November election is expected to provide a much different political environment, with Democrats and Republicans preparing for a general-election contest that will determine who represents the district in Congress.

Jones is positioning his campaign around issues including the rising cost of living, healthcare affordability, education, veterans’ needs and individual rights.

Carl, meanwhile, enters the general election as the Republican nominee after securing his party’s nomination in the special primary. His campaign has emphasized his Republican credentials and support from President Donald Trump.

The race is expected to attract considerable attention as both campaigns work to introduce themselves to voters across the district and define the major issues that will shape the November contest.

The battle for the 1st District is also part of a broader political landscape in Alabama, where congressional contests in Districts 1, 2 and 5 are expected to draw attention during the 2026 election cycle.

For now, Jones is making one thing clear: he wants the November campaign to be about more than party labels.

By challenging his opponent to debate, Jones is asking voters to hear directly from both candidates and decide which vision they believe should represent Alabama’s 1st Congressional District in Washington.
