MICHIGAN (BuzzReport) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom brought an unmistakably upbeat message to Michigan Democrats as the party ramps up its efforts to reclaim political ground heading into the 2026 midterm elections: the Democratic comeback is already underway.

Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd during a campaign-style appearance in Michigan, Newsom pointed to what he described as a growing string of Democratic victories across the country, arguing that the party is making significant progress in its effort to flip Republican-held seats.

“Democrats literally have flipped 30 seats from red to blue,” Newsom told the crowd. “They’re going to win.”

Newsom’s remarks were aimed at energizing Democrats who have spent much of the period since Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential victory confronting questions about the party’s direction, electoral strategy and ability to compete effectively in Republican-leaning districts.

The California governor argued that Democrats should view recent victories as evidence that voters are increasingly willing to support Democratic candidates — but he cautioned against becoming complacent.

“Our way back to the majority, 2026, not just here in the House, is through the fight,” Newsom said. “And you guys are fighters.”

Newsom urged Michigan Democrats to remain focused on several major contests, including the fight for control of the U.S. Senate and the governor’s mansion.

He called on Democrats to “make sure that we win the United States Senate” and “make sure that we celebrate the end of Donald Trump’s presidency.”

But amid the cheers and optimism, Newsom delivered a warning that could prove just as important as his prediction of Democratic victories.

“We don’t run the 90-yard dash,” he said. “We can’t take anything for granted.”

That message reflects the difficult political environment Democrats face heading into the midterms. While the party is attempting to capitalize on Republican vulnerabilities and voter dissatisfaction, Republicans remain a formidable political force with strong fundraising networks, an energized base and the advantages that come with incumbency in many competitive races.

Newsom also pointed to Michigan’s political developments as another reason for Democratic optimism, including the reported upset victory of Abdul El-Sayed in the Democratic Senate primary.

For Newsom, however, enthusiasm alone will not be enough.

“The enthusiasm is real. The wins are real. But so is the opposition,” he said, describing the political battle ahead as a fight against what he called “ruthlessness.”

“I know a thing or two about it,” Newsom added.

The governor’s appearance comes as Democrats attempt to transform post-election frustration into an organized national campaign ahead of November 2026. Rather than focusing exclusively on traditionally Democratic territory, party leaders are increasingly emphasizing competitive districts where Republican incumbents could be vulnerable.

Newsom’s argument is that Democrats cannot simply wait for political conditions to improve. They have to actively compete in every race where they see an opportunity.

The question now is whether the energy Newsom described can survive the long road to November — and whether Democratic victories can continue at a pace sufficient to change the balance of power in Washington and in state governments across the country.

Newsom’s message to Michigan Democrats was clear: don’t celebrate yet. Fight harder.

“The comeback,” his remarks suggested, “isn’t something Democrats have to wait for.”
