MOBILE, Ala. (BuzzReport) — A police pursuit involving a stolen vehicle came to a dramatic end Tuesday afternoon when the fleeing driver drove into the water at the end of Dog River Court, leading to the arrests of a 19-year-old and a juvenile passenger. According to the Mobile Police Department, the incident began on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026, at approximately 3:16 p.m. when officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle that had been reported stolen. Officers located the vehicle near the intersection of Navco Road and McVay Drive, but the driver refused to stop, prompting a pursuit. Police said the chase continued through the area before ending at the end of Dog River Court, where the driver lost control or intentionally drove the stolen vehicle into the water. Authorities identified the driver as Bruce Smith Jr., 19, who was taken into custody at the scene without further incident. He was transported to Mobile Metro Jail to face charges related to the pursuit and the stolen vehicle investigation. A juvenile male who was riding in the vehicle was also arrested and transported to the Strickland Youth Center. Because of his age, authorities have not released his identity. Investigators said the vehicle had been reported stolen one day earlier from the 6700 block of Zeigler Boulevard on Monday, Aug. 3, 2026. Police have not announced the specific charges filed against Smith or the juvenile, and it was not immediately known whether either suspect was injured after the vehicle entered the water. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges could be filed as detectives continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the vehicle theft and pursuit. Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to contact the Mobile Police Department.
