DESTIN, Fla. (BuzzReport) — A dangerous high-speed pursuit through the heart of Destin early Sunday morning ended with the arrest of a 24-year-old Mary Esther man after deputies say he sped through traffic at speeds reaching 120 miles per hour, forcing motorists to take evasive action to avoid being struck. According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began shortly after 1:25 a.m. Sunday, when dispatchers received multiple reports of a white BMW being driven recklessly eastbound on U.S. Highway 98. Witnesses told authorities the vehicle was traveling at an excessive rate of speed and had crossed over a raised median, creating a dangerous situation for other drivers. Deputies soon located the BMW near Harbor Boulevard, where they observed additional reckless driving and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Instead of pulling over, investigators say the driver accelerated and fled, leading deputies on a high-speed pursuit through Destin. During the chase, the driver allegedly reached speeds of up to 120 mph in areas posted for 55 mph, nearly doubling the legal speed limit. Authorities say the BMW weaved aggressively through traffic, tailgated other vehicles, made abrupt lane changes, and forced numerous motorists to slam on their brakes or swerve to avoid a collision. The pursuit stretched approximately 3.7 miles before the driver finally brought the vehicle to a stop in the median near 1334 Miracle Strip Parkway SE. Deputies took the suspect into custody without further incident. Authorities identified the driver as Rojai Anthoneil Lawrence, 24, of Mary Esther. Lawrence has been charged with: Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer with Wanton Disregard for the Safety of Persons or Property Reckless Driving Fortunately, despite the extreme speeds and hazardous driving behavior, no injuries were reported during the pursuit. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office credited concerned citizens who quickly reported the reckless driver, saying those calls allowed deputies to intervene before the situation turned tragic. “Reckless driving puts everyone on the roadway at risk,” the Sheriff’s Office stated, expressing appreciation for the motorists who promptly alerted authorities. The case serves as another reminder of the deadly consequences that can result from excessive speed and reckless driving. Law enforcement officials continue to urge drivers to obey traffic laws and report dangerous behavior immediately, emphasizing that a single reckless decision behind the wheel can have life-changing consequences.
