BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BuzzReport) – A tragic workplace accident claimed the life of a Bessemer man Tuesday morning at a Birmingham metal distribution facility, prompting investigations by both local authorities and federal workplace safety officials.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Lederiest Antwon Clark, 37, of Bessemer.

According to the Birmingham Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly after 8 a.m. to Mill Steel Company, located in the 100 block of Finley Avenue in north Birmingham, following reports of an industrial accident. When first responders arrived, they found Clark unresponsive after he suffered injuries believed to be consistent with a workplace incident.

Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced Clark dead at the scene.

Authorities have not released details about the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident, including what equipment or machinery may have been involved. Investigators are working to determine exactly what happened, and officials have not indicated whether foul play or equipment failure is suspected.

As is standard procedure in workplace fatalities, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been notified and has launched its own investigation. The federal agency will examine the incident to determine whether workplace safety regulations were followed and whether any violations contributed to Clark’s death.

The Birmingham Police Department said the investigation remains active and ongoing.

In a statement, authorities expressed their condolences and asked the community to keep Clark’s family, friends, and coworkers in their thoughts and prayers as they cope with the devastating loss.

The findings of the OSHA investigation and the police inquiry are expected to provide more answers in the coming weeks regarding the events that led to the fatal industrial accident.
