GULFPORT, MS (BuzzReport) — A devastating family tragedy is under investigation after an 18-year-old man was allegedly shot and killed by his own father Tuesday morning in Gulfport.

According to the Gulfport Police Department, officers responded to a reported shooting on Ohio Avenue, where they found 18-year-old Jacarless Rupert suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency responders rushed Rupert to a local hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts, he later died from his injuries, according to the Harrison County Coroner’s Office.

Police arrested Carliss Demetric Rupert, 56, at the scene without incident. He has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting.

Authorities have not released details about what led to the shooting or what may have occurred inside the residence before officers arrived. Investigators also have not indicated whether there were any prior domestic incidents or what evidence led to the filing of the murder charge.

Under Mississippi law, a second-degree murder charge generally alleges an intentional killing that was not planned in advance. However, investigators have emphasized that the specific circumstances surrounding this case have not yet been made public.

The death of Jacarless Rupert has left the Gulfport community mourning yet another young life lost to violence, while raising questions about what led to the deadly confrontation between father and son.

The Gulfport Police Department continues to investigate the case and is expected to release additional information as the investigation progresses. Anyone with information that may assist detectives is encouraged to contact Gulfport Police or Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information is released by law enforcement.
