MOBILE, AL (BuzzReport) — A act of gun violence has claimed the life of a juvenile male following a targeted shooting in downtown Mobile early Sunday morning, capping off what had otherwise been a heavily patrolled Fourth of July holiday weekend.

According to the Mobile Police Department, officers responded around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, after receiving notification that a juvenile gunshot victim had arrived at a local hospital in a private vehicle suffering from a life-threatening injury. Despite emergency medical efforts, the victim was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Investigators determined the shooting occurred near the intersection of Government Street and Bayou Street while the victim was riding inside a vehicle with several other occupants. Police say multiple rounds were fired into the vehicle, striking the juvenile. Although the other passengers escaped without physical injuries, the victim’s wound proved fatal.

Authorities have not released the victim’s identity pending notification of family members, nor have they announced any arrests or identified any suspects.

Mobile Police Chief William Jackson said the department had increased its presence downtown throughout the holiday weekend, deploying additional officers and implementing enhanced public safety measures alongside the city’s juvenile curfew.

According to Jackson, the deadly shooting occurred after the majority of people attending downtown Independence Day celebrations had already left the area. Based on the evidence gathered so far, investigators believe the shooting was an isolated and targeted attack, not a random act of violence.

“My officers responded immediately and began their investigation. While any act of violence is concerning, it appears this was an isolated, targeted incident. My investigators have worked tirelessly through the night, and they continue to work this case, utilizing every resource available to identify the person, or persons, responsible,” Jackson said.

Detectives continue processing evidence, reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and following investigative leads as they work to determine what led to the shooting and who was responsible.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Mobile Police Department at 251-208-7211. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by texting 844-251-0644 or through the department’s online Crime Tip portal.

Police encourage anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the Government Street and Bayou Street area around 2 a.m. Sunday morning to come forward, as even the smallest piece of information could prove critical in solving the case.
