ATMORE, AL (BuzzReport) — A welfare check requested by a concerned family member led to the discovery of a critically injured woman and the arrest of a south Alabama man now facing an attempted murder charge.

According to the Atmore Police Department, officers responded late on the evening of July 2, 2026, to the Hampton Inn in Atmore after receiving a request to check on the welfare of an individual staying at the hotel.

When officers arrived, they encountered circumstances that prompted them to force entry into a hotel room. Inside, they found an adult woman unconscious and suffering from severe traumatic injuries.

Emergency medical personnel were immediately called to the scene. The victim was transported to a regional trauma center, where she remains hospitalized and continues to receive medical treatment.

Following the discovery, investigators with the Atmore Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Investigations Division launched an extensive investigation to determine what had occurred.

As the investigation progressed, detectives identified Robert Heath Walker, of Leroy, Alabama, as the suspect. Authorities charged Walker with Attempt to Commit the Crime of Murder (Attempted Murder).

On July 3, 2026, Walker was taken into custody through a coordinated operation involving the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force. He was later transported to the Escambia County Detention Center, where he remains in custody awaiting bond proceedings.

The Atmore Police Department thanked the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force for its assistance in locating and apprehending Walker.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to the incident or the relationship between the suspect and the victim. The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to contact the Atmore Police Department.

As with all criminal cases, Robert Heath Walker is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
