MONTGOMERY, AL (BuzzReport)—Alabama’s Republican U.S. Senator and gubernatorial candidate, Tommy Tuberville, is once again facing scrutiny over his long-standing promise to support veterans financially. A new review of tax filings from the Tommy Tuberville Foundation is raising fresh questions about whether the nonprofit lived up to the senator’s public claims that he was donating “every dime” to help veterans while serving in Washington.

The concerns center not only on how much money reached veterans’ organizations, but also on the foundation’s financial reporting. According to a review of the nonprofit’s public filings, the records contain multiple discrepancies and apparent reporting errors that critics say make it difficult to determine exactly where donated money went.

Among the most significant issues is a tax filing showing approximately $90,000 in grants that reportedly did not identify the organizations receiving the funds. Federal nonprofit filings generally require charities to disclose grant recipients, and the missing information has fueled questions about the foundation’s transparency.

The review also found no public records indicating the Tommy Tuberville Foundation was registered or licensed to solicit charitable contributions in Alabama, despite reportedly collecting roughly half a million dollars in donations over the past decade. Whether the foundation was exempt from registration or otherwise complied with state law has become another point of inquiry. (The absence of public registration records alone does not necessarily establish a legal violation.)

The latest scrutiny adds to years of questions surrounding the foundation’s finances. Previous investigations found the charity raised hundreds of thousands of dollars while directing a relatively small percentage of its revenue toward charitable programs benefiting veterans and other causes. Foundation representatives previously argued that tax filings failed to capture volunteer labor and donated materials used in charitable projects.

Tuberville also drew national attention after pledging during his 2020 Senate campaign to donate his entire congressional salary to veterans’ organizations. However, reporting in 2023 found no evidence that those salary donations had been made during his first three years in the Senate. A spokesperson at the time said the foundation had been undergoing an audit and was being reorganized.

The renewed questions arrive at a politically sensitive time as Tuberville campaigns for governor of Alabama. With ethics, transparency, and accountability expected to play prominent roles in the race, critics argue voters deserve a full accounting of the foundation’s finances and the disposition of charitable donations.

However, the questions surrounding the nonprofit’s reporting and its charitable distributions are likely to remain part of the political conversation as Alabama’s gubernatorial campaign intensifies.
