CITRONELLE, AL (BuzzReport) — A tragic house fire claimed the life of a bedridden resident Monday morning despite an aggressive rescue effort by firefighters who battled heavy smoke and flames in an attempt to save the victim.

According to Citronelle Fire & Rescue, emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 10:59 a.m. to a reported residential fire on Johnson Avenue. Initial reports indicated that a bedridden occupant was trapped inside the home and that the fire was believed to have started in the victim’s bedroom.

Engine 602 was the first unit to arrive on scene, where firefighters encountered heavy black smoke pouring from the residence. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, crews immediately launched simultaneous rescue and fire suppression operations.

Firefighters deployed a roof ladder to reach a rear bedroom window while additional crews stretched a hose line to the back of the home. After briefly applying water through the bedroom window to knock down the flames and reduce the intense fire conditions, firefighters forced entry into the room and initiated an interior fire attack.

Despite the rapid response and determined rescue efforts, firefighters located the bedridden occupant deceased inside the residence.

The heartbreaking incident has left the Citronelle community mourning the loss of a resident who was unable to escape the fast-moving fire.

In a statement following the tragedy, Citronelle Fire & Rescue extended its deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.

“Citronelle Fire & Rescue extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

The department also expressed appreciation to the numerous agencies that assisted during the emergency, including the Citronelle Police Department, Mobile County EMS, and Oak Grove Fire & Rescue, which responded under the department’s automatic aid agreement.

Fire officials asked the public to keep the victim’s family, friends, firefighters, emergency responders, and everyone affected by the tragedy in their thoughts and prayers.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office, which will work to determine how the blaze started and whether any contributing factors were involved.

Additional information, including the identity of the victim, has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
