MOBILE, Ala. (BuzzReport) — Charges have been dismissed against a Mobile County man who was accused of participating in a downtown Mobile shootout during Joe Cain Day festivities earlier this year, after prosecutors determined evidence did not support claims that he was involved in the shooting.

Mobile County District Judge Johana Bucci granted a request from prosecutors to dismiss five counts of first-degree assault against 22-year-old Devon Deangelos Jeffery, who had been jailed since his arrest in connection with the February 15 shooting.

The incident occurred around 11 p.m. in the heart of downtown Mobile during Mardi Gras celebrations. Investigators said the violence stemmed from an argument between two men inside a nightclub that later spilled onto Dauphin Street. Gunfire erupted in the crowded entertainment district, leaving five innocent bystanders wounded.

Initially, authorities charged both Jeffery and Cornelius Coleman with five counts of first-degree assault. However, Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood announced Tuesday that evidence gathered during the investigation indicated Jeffery was not one of the individuals who fired shots that night.

Defense attorney Jeff Deen said his client consistently maintained his innocence from the moment he was arrested.

“As we said at the very beginning of this case, Devon Jeffery maintained that he was not downtown when this shooting occurred,” Deen said.

According to the defense, forensic analysis of Jeffery’s cellphone records revealed he was speaking with his girlfriend at the time of the shooting. Deen also presented Ring camera footage from Jeffery’s residence in Semmes that allegedly showed him at home at approximately 11:03 p.m., around the same time shots were fired in downtown Mobile.

“He has been sitting in jail this entire time while being falsely accused,” Deen said. “The prosecution reviewed the evidence we presented and ultimately agreed that he was not involved.”

The dismissal marks a significant development in one of the most high-profile criminal cases connected to this year’s Mardi Gras celebrations.

PREVIOUS SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

This is not the first time Jeffery’s name has surfaced during a shooting investigation.

In April 2024, Jeffery was involved in a gunfight at a barbershop on Pleasant Valley Road. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the entire incident. Authorities ultimately charged the other individual involved, Jamarcus Grayson, with first-degree assault, while Jeffery was never arrested in that case.

His attorney has maintained that Jeffery was the victim during that incident and acted in self-defense.

CASE CONTINUES AGAINST COLEMAN

While charges against Jeffery have been dismissed, the criminal case remains active against Cornelius Coleman.

A judge ruled last month that prosecutors presented sufficient evidence for Coleman’s case to move forward through the court system.

District Attorney Blackwood declined to discuss specific details surrounding the ongoing investigation but indicated authorities believe additional arrests may be forthcoming.

“Someone was obviously shooting,” Blackwood said. “We have a pretty good idea of who that person may be. The investigation is still unfolding, and if probable cause exists showing another individual was involved, that person will be charged.”

INVESTIGATION REMAINS ACTIVE

The Joe Cain Day shooting shocked residents and visitors alike as thousands packed downtown Mobile to celebrate one of the city’s most popular Mardi Gras traditions. The violence renewed concerns about public safety during large-scale events and prompted increased scrutiny of security measures in the downtown entertainment district.

As investigators continue to pursue leads and identify all individuals responsible for the gunfire, officials say the case remains active and additional charges could be filed as new evidence emerges.

For Jeffery, however, the dismissal brings an end to months of legal uncertainty after prosecutors concluded the evidence did not place him at the scene of the shooting that injured five innocent victims during one of Mobile’s largest annual celebrations.
