IRVINGTON, Ala. (BuzzReport) — A tragic incident in Irvington has turned deadly after a woman was struck by an Amtrak train near the intersection of Irvington Bayou La Batre Highway and Highway 90, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities confirmed in an update that the woman has died from her injuries after initially being transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Investigators say preliminary information indicates the woman was sitting on the railroad tracks before the collision occurred. Deputies stated that she attempted to get up after noticing the train approaching, but was unable to move out of the way before being struck.

Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, where law enforcement and first responders worked to secure the area and provide medical aid before the victim was transported for emergency treatment.

The identity of the woman has not yet been released pending notification of family members.

The circumstances surrounding why the woman was on the tracks remain under investigation. Authorities have not released additional details at this time.
