Prichard, AL (BuzzReport)- A violent confrontation in a Prichard parking lot turned deadly Sunday afternoon, leaving one man dead and authorities piecing together what led to the fatal encounter.

According to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a shooting around 2 p.m. at Brothers Food Mart. When they arrived, they found 39-year-old Tyler Carl Edward Hodges suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the shooting stemmed from a heated argument that escalated rapidly. Preliminary findings, including surveillance footage from the store, show Hodges standing in the parking lot with several individuals when an older model GMC pickup truck pulled in and parked nearby. An argument soon broke out between Hodges and the driver.

Authorities say the situation intensified when Hodges walked to the trunk of his vehicle, retrieved a machete, and approached the truck while brandishing the weapon. During the confrontation, the driver fired multiple shots, striking Hodges before fleeing the scene.

The suspected shooter has since been located and interviewed by law enforcement. The case has been turned over to the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office for review to determine whether charges will be filed.

Witnesses at the scene have backed up what investigators observed in the surveillance footage. According to officials, several individuals confirmed that the deadly encounter was part of an ongoing dispute between the two men. Authorities revealed that roughly two weeks prior, the same suspect had reportedly been injured during an altercation involving Hodges and the same machete.

The investigation remains active as officials continue reviewing evidence and witness statements to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
