McComb, Miss. (BuzzReport) — A tragic shooting in McComb has claimed the life of an 18-year-old high school senior, leaving a community in mourning and authorities searching for answers.

According to investigators, officers were dispatched to an apartment in the 100 block of Pine Street shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, following reports of a shooting. When police arrived, they found Laraya Hood suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but Hood later succumbed to her injuries.

Law enforcement officials moved quickly in the investigation, identifying and arresting 18-year-old Zytavious Barnes in connection with the shooting. Barnes has since been charged with murder. Authorities confirmed that Barnes and Hood were known to each other and had a prior relationship, though investigators have not yet disclosed a possible motive or the circumstances that led to the deadly encounter.

The McComb School District released a statement expressing profound grief over Hood’s death. District officials extended condolences to her family, friends, and classmates, describing the loss as deeply felt across the school community. Counselors and support services are being made available to students and staff as they cope with the emotional aftermath.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward. Officials have not indicated whether additional charges could be filed.

The case remains under active investigation.
