Gulfport, MS (BuzzReport) — A routine traffic stop along Interstate 10 turned into a major drug seizure Wednesday afternoon, as authorities uncovered more than six pounds of cocaine and arrested a Florida woman on serious trafficking charges. According to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, the stop occurred on April 22 at approximately 1:33 p.m. in the eastbound lanes near the 36-mile marker in Gulfport. Sheriff Matt Haley confirmed the details Thursday, describing the seizure as a significant blow to narcotics trafficking along the Gulf Coast corridor. A deputy assigned to the agency’s Criminal Interdiction Division initiated the stop of a Nissan Altima and made contact with the driver, identified as Amy Broadt of Fort Walton Beach. During the encounter, a K-9 unit conducted a free-air sniff of the vehicle and alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics. That alert led deputies to conduct a probable cause search of the vehicle. Inside the trunk, investigators discovered approximately 6.6 pounds of cocaine concealed within a bag, officials said. Narcotics investigators with the sheriff’s office were called to the scene and assumed control of the case as the investigation expanded. Broadt was taken into custody and transported to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center, where she was booked on a charge of aggravated trafficking of cocaine. Bond was set at $250,000 by Albert Fountain. Authorities have not released additional details, and the investigation remains ongoing.
