ANNANDALE, Va. (BuzzReport)— Authorities have confirmed that Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax Involved in Fatal Shooting That Claimed Wife’s Life was involved in a deadly domestic shooting at his home early Thursday morning, a tragedy that left both his wife and Fairfax dead.

According to investigators, the incident occurred shortly after midnight at the couple’s residence in Fairfax County. Police say Fairfax fatally shot his wife, Cerina Fairfax, inside the home before turning the gun on himself in what officials have described as an apparent murder-suicide. 

Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from an ongoing domestic dispute tied to a contentious divorce. The couple, who had been separated but still living under the same roof, had reportedly been dealing with escalating tensions in recent months. 

Children Present During Incident

Police confirmed that the couple’s two teenage children were inside the home at the time of the shooting. One of the children called 911, prompting a rapid response from law enforcement. 

Investigators say the violence unfolded quickly. Preliminary findings indicate Cerina Fairfax was shot multiple times, and Fairfax later moved to another area of the home where he took his own life. 

The children are now in the care of relatives.

Ongoing Investigation and Prior Domestic Issues

Law enforcement officials say the case remains under active investigation, but early evidence points to a domestic dispute connected to divorce proceedings as a key factor. Fairfax had recently been served legal paperwork related to an upcoming court hearing, which authorities believe may have contributed to the escalation. 

Police also revealed that officers had previously responded to a domestic-related incident at the home earlier this year. In that case, allegations made by Fairfax were later determined to be unfounded after review of home surveillance footage. 

Political Background

Fairfax, 47, served as Virginia’s lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022 and was once considered a rising figure in state and national politics. His career, however, was significantly impacted by past controversies, including sexual assault allegations that he denied. 

He later sought the Democratic nomination for governor in 2021 but was unsuccessful, after which he largely stepped away from public life.
