HATTIESBURG, Miss. (BuzzReport)— Authorities in Hattiesburg are investigating a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a teenager Sunday evening, prompting an active search for a suspect who fled the scene.

According to the Hattiesburg Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 7:56 p.m. on April 12 to a residence in the 900 block of Cypress Avenue following reports of gunfire.

When officers arrived, they discovered a 17-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency responders transported the victim to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators have classified the case as a homicide.

Witnesses told police that a male suspect left the scene shortly after the shooting in a dark-colored SUV. Early findings in the investigation indicate the suspect and the victim are related, though authorities have not released further details about the nature of their relationship.

Detectives are actively pursuing leads to identify both the suspect and the vehicle involved. Officials are urging anyone with information, including surveillance footage from the area or sightings of the vehicle, to come forward.
