Jury Finds Darius Lucky Jr. Guilty of Capital Murder in Deadly Mobile Drive-By Shooting

MOBILE, Ala. (BuzzReport) — Darius Janoski Lucky Jr. has been found guilty of capital murder following a jury verdict delivered Thursday in Mobile County Circuit Court, bringing a major development in a case that has drawn widespread attention across the region.

The jury convicted the 20-year-old on two counts of capital murder in connection with the 2023 shooting death of 9-year-old Cailee Knight, who was killed when gunfire was unleashed into her family’s home during an early morning drive-by shooting. 

Details of the Crime

According to prosecutors, the shooting occurred just before 2 a.m. on December 5, 2023, at a residence on Rhett Drive in west Mobile. Authorities said multiple individuals fired into the home, allegedly targeting someone inside. 

Investigators determined that a high-powered rifle round entered the residence through a window and struck the child while she was asleep on the couch in the living room. 

Prosecutors argued during trial that Lucky was one of three shooters and that the fatal shot came from his weapon. The attack, they said, stemmed from a dispute involving others, but resulted in the tragic death of a child who was not the intended target. 

Jury Verdict and Charges

After several hours of deliberation spanning parts of two days, the jury returned guilty verdicts on two capital murder charges:

• Murder of a child under the age of 14
• Murder committed by shooting into an occupied dwelling 

The courtroom reportedly fell silent as the verdict was read, marking the conclusion of a trial filled with emotional testimony and intense legal arguments. 

Sentencing and Legal Outlook

Under Alabama law, the convictions carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty in this case. 

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for May 21 before Circuit Judge Ben Brooks. 

Defense attorneys have indicated plans to appeal the conviction, signaling that the case is likely to continue through the appellate courts.
