ST. MARTIN, Miss. — A 27-year-old woman who died following a fatal shootout with a Jackson County sheriff’s deputy was under active investigation by the Mississippi Board of Nursing just one day before the deadly encounter.

Authorities identified the woman as Maley Ross, who allegedly shot and killed Jackson County Deputy Michael Jimerson during an exchange of gunfire at The Reserve apartments in St. Martin. The incident has sent shockwaves through the coastal Mississippi community, raising questions about Ross’s recent history and the events leading up to the confrontation.

According to official documents, Ross had been facing multiple allegations filed with the Mississippi Board of Nursing prior to the shooting. The complaints reportedly included claims of patient abandonment, suspected substance abuse, and concerns regarding anger management issues. The records indicate that the case was active and under review at the time of the incident.

Investigators have not publicly confirmed whether the nursing board allegations were directly connected to the events that led to the deadly shootout. However, the timing has drawn significant attention as authorities work to piece together Ross’s state of mind and circumstances in the hours leading up to the violence.

The shooting occurred at The Reserve apartment complex, where deputies had responded to a call before the situation escalated into gunfire. Deputy Jimerson was fatally wounded during the exchange. Ross was also shot and later pronounced dead.

Deputy Jimerson’s death marks a tragic loss for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the broader law enforcement community. Officials have described him as a dedicated public servant who was committed to protecting the residents of Jackson County.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the ongoing inquiry into the incident. Authorities say additional details, including what prompted the initial response and the sequence of events during the shootout, remain under investigation.

Meanwhile, the case has also brought increased scrutiny to the handling of complaints within professional licensing boards, particularly when allegations involve potential risks to public safety.

As the investigation continues, officials are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward.

Further updates are expected as more details are released.
