Vice Mayor’s Death Investigated as Domestic Violence; Husband Charged with Murder

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (BuzzReport) — The death of a South Florida vice mayor is being investigated as a domestic violence homicide after authorities say her husband fatally shot her inside their home, sending shockwaves through the community and state political circles.

Police identified the victim as Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, a prominent public servant and rising political figure. Officers discovered her body on April 1 during a welfare check after she failed to attend a scheduled meeting, prompting concern from colleagues and family members. 

According to investigators, her death is being treated as a domestic violence incident. Her husband, Stephen Bowen, 40, has been arrested and charged with first-degree premeditated murder and tampering with evidence, and is being held without bond at the Broward County jail. 

Allegations and Evidence

Authorities allege that Bowen shot his wife multiple times inside their home. Evidence cited in arrest reports suggests an attempt to conceal the crime, including wrapping the victim’s body in blankets and garbage bags. 

Investigators also say Bowen later confessed to a relative, telling him he “couldn’t take it anymore,” before attempting to dispose of or transfer weapons linked to the shooting. 

Police indicated there are no additional suspects and no ongoing threat to the public as the investigation continues. 

A Community in Mourning

Metayer Bowen, 38, was widely recognized as a trailblazing leader. She was the first Black and Haitian American woman elected as a Coral Springs commissioner and was serving her second term as vice mayor. 

Beyond her municipal role, she also served as vice chair of the Florida Democratic Party, where she was known for her work in community advocacy, environmental justice, and civic engagement. 

Colleagues and community leaders described her as compassionate and dedicated, noting her lasting impact on residents and public policy across Broward County. 

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not released a full timeline of events leading up to the shooting, but confirmed the case remains active as detectives continue to review evidence and conduct interviews.

The killing comes amid a broader national focus on domestic violence cases involving public figures, highlighting the often-hidden nature of abuse even among high-profile individuals.

As the investigation unfolds, community members are planning vigils and memorials to honor Metayer Bowen’s life and legacy.
