Clark Avenue Reopens in Prichard After Major Infrastructure Repairs

Prichard, AL (BuzzReport) — A key roadway in the city of Prichard has officially reopened following the completion of major infrastructure repairs aimed at correcting long-standing underground issues and improving roadway safety for residents and commuters.

City officials announced that Clark Avenue, between College Street and Josephine Street, has reopened to traffic after crews completed a series of high-priority repairs. The project was part of the administration’s broader infrastructure initiative designed to stabilize aging systems and address hazards that had previously forced road closures in the area.

According to city leaders, the repairs targeted multiple underground failures that had compromised the roadway’s stability and created safety concerns for motorists and nearby residents.

Storm Drainage Repairs Address Erosion

One of the most critical issues involved a damaged corrugated steel storm pipe beneath the roadway. Officials said a hole in the pipe allowed stormwater to escape, which led to significant soil erosion and the formation of sink areas under the pavement.

To correct the problem, crews wrapped the pipe with protective filter fabric and used flowable fill to stabilize the surrounding soil. The repair was designed to prevent further erosion and strengthen the underground structure supporting the road.

Sewer Issues Created Dangerous Voids

During the project, workers also discovered a broken, inactive sewer lateral line that had been allowing inflow and infiltration beneath the roadway. The leaking infrastructure created void spaces below the pavement, increasing the risk of collapse.

City crews worked in coordination with the Prichard Water Works & Sewer Board to address the issue. Flowable fill was again used to eliminate the voids and provide a stable base before resurfacing work began.

Roadway Fully Resurfaced

Once underground repairs were completed, construction crews milled the existing pavement and installed a new asphalt wearing surface along the affected stretch of Clark Avenue. Fresh roadway striping was also added to improve traffic visibility and safety.

Officials say the resurfacing will provide long-term durability while improving travel conditions for drivers, residents, and emergency vehicles that rely on the corridor.

Part of City’s 100-Day Infrastructure Plan

City leaders said the reopening of Clark Avenue represents another milestone in the administration’s 100-Day Plan, which prioritizes “shovel-ready” infrastructure projects throughout the city.

The initiative focuses on repairing failing underground systems, stabilizing aging roads, and improving neighborhood safety across all districts in Prichard.

With the project now complete, traffic is once again flowing along the corridor, restoring a vital connection for residents and marking another step in the city’s ongoing effort to modernize critical infrastructure.
