Cullman County, AL (BuzzReport) — A former Alabama attorney accused of attempting to kill her husband has been formally indicted by a grand jury on multiple serious charges, according to court records. Prosecutors say Sara Baker faces charges including conspiracy to commit murder, three counts of attempted murder, domestic violence, and unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. The indictment alleges Baker attempted “to cause the death” of her husband, James Baker, during a series of incidents that reportedly occurred in September 2025. Authorities in Cullman County previously arrested Baker in November 2025 after investigators accused her of placing fentanyl in her husband’s food or drink in an alleged attempt to poison him. Before her arrest, Baker worked as an attorney in Cullman County and previously served in the office of the Cullman County District Attorney’s Office. Following the allegations, the Alabama State Bar suspended her law license in December 2025. Legal observers say the unusual nature of the case has drawn significant attention within the legal community. “This is something that ‘Dateline’ or ‘20/20’ would pick up. This is a bizzaro in our world,” said defense attorney Roger Appell, who is not involved in the case. Appell said that in his experience as a criminal defense attorney, the case stands out for its complexity and potential scope. “This is a case that’s going to take a lot of time to prepare, a lot of evidence, expert witnesses. And it could take a long time. She’s going to need a really fine defense attorney,” Appell said. According to court documents, a justice with the Alabama Supreme Court has appointed a judge from Walker County to preside over the case. The investigation and legal proceedings remain ongoing.
