Montgomery, AL (BuzzReport) — Health care advocates and policy experts will gather at the Alabama State House next week to present new research examining the potential financial and health impacts of expanding Medicaid in Alabama, a move supporters say could transform access to care for thousands of low-income residents.

The public briefing, hosted by Cover Alabama and Families USA, is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, in Room 200 of the Alabama State House in Montgomery. The event is part of Cover Alabama’s annual Advocacy Day and will focus on newly released projections outlining how Medicaid expansion could affect the state’s budget and health care system.

Advocates say the issue remains urgent as Alabama continues to be one of only ten states that have not expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. The decision has left hundreds of thousands of low-income adults without coverage and placed continued financial strain on hospitals and rural health providers across the state.

“No one should have to choose between going to the doctor and putting food on the table,” organizers said in announcing the event, arguing that more than a decade of inaction has left federal funding on the table while residents struggle to access affordable care.

During the briefing, policy experts will present a new analysis of Alabama’s projected financial commitment to Medicaid expansion under One Big Beautiful Bill Act, also referred to as HR 1. The research will outline how recent federal policy changes could affect the state’s required investment if lawmakers choose to expand coverage.

Representatives from Cover Alabama and Families USA — a national nonprofit focused on consumer health policy — will walk attendees through how Alabama’s share of expansion costs has shifted under the legislation. They are also expected to discuss broader implications for the state budget, the stability of hospitals and clinics, and the number of uninsured residents who could gain coverage.

Advocates argue that expansion could help stabilize Alabama’s health care infrastructure, particularly in rural communities where hospitals have faced increasing financial pressure. Supporters say the influx of federal dollars tied to expansion could strengthen medical services while reducing uncompensated care costs.

The event is open to the public, and organizers are encouraging lawmakers, journalists, advocates and residents to attend.
