Mobile County, Ala. (BuzzReport) — Two Mississippi residents were killed early Saturday morning in a head-on collision involving a sport utility vehicle and a commercial tractor-trailer, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:36 a.m. on Alabama 158 near Wilmer-Georgetown Road, about six miles west of Semmes in Mobile County. The roadway was closed for a period while emergency crews responded and investigators worked the scene.

Troopers said a GMC Acadia occupied by 57-year-old Daphne D. Peters of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and her passenger, 58-year-old Dexter Magee of Collins, Mississippi, collided head-on with a Freightliner semitractor-trailer. Peters was pronounced dead at the scene. Magee was ejected from the vehicle and also pronounced dead. Authorities said Magee was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Following the initial impact, the Freightliner semitractor-trailer, driven by a 36-year-old man from Vicksburg, Mississippi, was struck by a Volvo semitractor-trailer operated by a 46-year-old man from Haines City, Florida, troopers said. Both drivers were transported to USA Health University Hospital in Mobile for treatment.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by state troopers.
