Las Vegas, NV (BuzzReport) — An attempted kidnapping investigation is underway after police say a man tried to lure a 13-year-old girl into his vehicle as she walked to school early Tuesday morning, raising concerns about possible additional victims in the area.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, officers arrested Kendrick Weatherspoon, 47, on charges of attempted kidnapping and luring a minor following an incident near Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue shortly before 7 a.m.

Timeline of the Incident

Investigators say the girl was walking along her usual route to school when she passed a bar where Weatherspoon was sitting inside a parked car. Police allege that he attempted to coax the child toward the vehicle and opened the door, prompting the girl to flee.

Despite fearing oncoming traffic, the child ran across the street to a nearby Smith’s grocery store, where two employees intervened, sheltered her, and immediately contacted police. Officers responded and located Weatherspoon, who was taken into custody without incident. He has denied attempting to lure the girl.

Vehicle and Area Concerns

In the hours following the arrest, LVMPD released an image of the suspect’s vehicle, citing its distinctive appearance. A parent from a nearby school told investigators the car was recognizable and had been seen in the area before.

Detectives now believe the vehicle may have been used to approach or lure minors on prior occasions. As a result, police are actively asking anyone who may have encountered the suspect or vehicle to come forward.

Criminal Background Under Review

Court records show Weatherspoon has a lengthy criminal history, including a 2021 arrest related to sex trafficking involving an adult. Authorities also confirmed he is banned from Nevada casinos. Investigators are reviewing whether any prior activity may be connected to the current case.

Ongoing Investigation

Weatherspoon is scheduled to return to court on Monday. Police stress that the investigation remains active and are urging parents, students, and residents in the area to remain vigilant.

Anyone with information related to this case, or who believes they may have had a similar encounter, is encouraged to contact LVMPD immediately or call 911.
