Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) — Former State Representative James O. Gordon of Mobile has announced his candidacy for Alabama Public Service Commission (PSC) Place 1, bringing decades of legislative experience and community involvement to a race that could shape the future of utility regulation across the state. Gordon previously represented Alabama House District 98, serving parts of Mobile County after first being elected in 2006. During his tenure, he built a reputation as a seasoned lawmaker with a focus on constituent service. He has also sought higher office, including a run for Congress in Alabama’s First Congressional District, further broadening his political profile. Outside of politics, Gordon has worked as a chiropractor and owned his own business for decades. His professional background, he says, has given him firsthand insight into the challenges faced by small businesses and working families—particularly as utility costs continue to rise. The Alabama Public Service Commission is an elected body responsible for regulating utility services statewide, including electricity, gas, water, and telecommunications. In recent years, the commission has faced increasing scrutiny as Alabamians report higher utility bills with little clarity on the reasons behind the increases. “As Alabamians seek accountability and affordability, candidates like Gordon have stepped forward to ensure everyday citizens have a voice on the commission,” Gordon’s campaign stated. “Affordability, mobility, and community are my top concerns,” Gordon said. “Some small-town leaders have never heard from the PSC or its commissioners. That will change when I’m elected.” Public frustration has intensified as many residents feel regulatory decisions too often favor large corporations over consumers. That concern has been amplified by legislation introduced in the Alabama House of Representatives that would end the public election of PSC members and instead make the positions appointed. Critics of the proposal—including some lawmakers and policy experts—argue that such a move would weaken transparency and reduce public accountability. Gordon’s long record of civic engagement is central to his campaign message. His community involvement has included membership in organizations such as the Mobile Association of Retarded Citizens, the NAACP, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and service on various local advisory boards. As the PSC race unfolds, Gordon is positioning himself as a candidate focused on restoring trust in utility regulation—promising greater communication, consumer protection, and a stronger connection between the commission and the communities it serves.
