Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) — Former Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson has been elected Chairman of the Mobile Airport Authority Board of Directors, marking a new chapter in leadership as the Authority advances construction of the new terminal at Mobile International Airport (BFM).

The announcement comes as the Airport Authority continues work on one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the city’s recent history — relocating commercial passenger air service from Mobile Regional Airport (MOB) to Mobile International Airport in downtown Mobile.

Stimpson, who recently retired after serving 12 years as mayor, has long been a leading advocate for bringing passenger air service closer to downtown. During his tenure, he consistently promoted the relocation as a catalyst for economic growth and improved accessibility.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue serving Mobile in this role as the vision for downtown passenger air service comes into focus,” Stimpson said. “I look forward to working alongside the rest of the Board as we move this project toward completion and opening. I want to thank Luckett Robinson for his leadership and steady guidance. This project is truly transformational for Mobile, and I’m proud to help guide it to completion.”

In addition to Stimpson’s election as Chairman, the Board unanimously selected Luckett Robinson as Vice Chairman, Walter Bell as Treasurer, and Jamie Ison as Secretary.

Outgoing Chairman E. Luckett Robinson reflected on his time leading the board and expressed support for the leadership transition.

“It has been a privilege to serve as chairman,” Robinson said. “We’ve accomplished a great deal together, and I’m grateful to our board, the Airport Authority staff and its leadership team for their dedication. I look forward to working closely with Chairman Stimpson and supporting his leadership as the Authority moves forward.”

Mobile Airport Authority Executive Director Andy Wilson thanked Robinson for his leadership during what he described as a critical year for the organization and emphasized continuity moving forward.

“I want to thank Luckett Robinson for his leadership and thoughtful direction during a critical year for the Authority,” Wilson said. “We’ve made meaningful progress under his chairmanship, and I look forward to working closely with Chairman Stimpson and the entire board as we complete this transformative project.”

Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis also praised the transition, highlighting Stimpson’s long-standing commitment to the downtown airport initiative.

“Mayor Stimpson has been a strong and vocal advocate for moving passenger air service downtown for more than a decade. As that vision takes form at the Mobile International Airport, I can’t think of a better person to lead the board of the Mobile Airport Authority,” Cheriogotis said. “Sandy’s natural and humble leadership is perfect for this critical time. With this leadership team in place, I am confident that the future of Mobile’s municipal airports is in great hands.”

The Mobile Airport Authority owns and operates four aviation assets: Mobile Regional Airport (MOB), Mobile International Airport (BFM), Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, and St. Elmo Airport. As a growing aeronautical hub on the Alabama Gulf Coast, the Authority supports commercial air service, aerospace manufacturing, and multimodal connectivity across Mobile and Baldwin counties.

Construction of the new terminal at Mobile International Airport is expected to significantly reshape commercial air travel in the region, with leaders describing the project as transformational for the city’s economic future.
