Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) — Mobile resident, educator, and longtime political activist Jyl Hughes has officially announced her candidacy for Alabama State Representative in House District 99, launching a Democratic primary challenge against incumbent Rep. Sam Jones.
“I am thrilled to announce that I have officially qualified with the Alabama Democratic Party to run for State Representative, District 99,” Hughes said in a statement.
Framing her campaign as a call for change, Hughes emphasized the need for new leadership and a departure from entrenched politics.
“I am showing up because new voices matter. Fresh perspective matters. And politics as usual has run its course,” she said.
Hughes is well known in Mobile for her grassroots involvement and community leadership. She has spent years working across education, ministry, nonprofit organizations, and community boards—experiences she says have shaped her people-centered approach to public service.
“For years, I have been present: serving, listening, and leading with a grassroots approach rooted in my community,” Hughes stated. “My commitment is, and has always been, to the people I serve.”
Currently serving as Vice Chair of the Mobile County Democratic Conference, Hughes brings prior campaign experience to the race, having previously run for Mobile County Revenue Commissioner. Her campaign platform centers on progressive policy solutions, equity, and responsive representation.
“I bring proven leadership, progressive ideas, and a deep commitment—all for the people,” Hughes said. “I am humbled to lead and qualified to serve.”
Hughes will face incumbent Sam Jones and local businessman and former candidate Levi Wright, Jr. in the Democratic primary on May 19. With growing interest in generational change and grassroots leadership, the District 99 race is expected to draw increased attention as primary season approaches.
