Prichard Officials Met To Discuss Public Safety in the City on Monday

Prichard, AL (BuzzReport) — Prichard city leadership took decisive steps Monday as the Mayor and the Committee on Public Safety met to confront several urgent quality-of-life and public safety concerns affecting neighborhoods across the city.

Strengthening animal control enforcement emerged as a top priority, particularly in addressing repeat offenders who continue to impact community safety. While current ordinances are already accessible online, the committee examined updates that would increase penalties for repeated violations and modernize ordinance language. These changes would allow citations to be issued based on verified identification and documented evidence, rather than requiring an officer to personally witness each violation. Officials also reviewed delays connected to state-mandated animal bite quarantine procedures and emphasized the importance of tighter coordination with the Health Department to ensure accountability. City leaders are working closely with the Animal Resources Supervisor to determine the most effective path forward.

Improving how residents communicate concerns to the City was another key focus of the meeting. Mayor Davis is pushing for expanded 311 capabilities that would include text and photo submissions. This enhancement would allow residents to submit time-stamped, location-based reports for issues such as loose animals, potholes, and other Public Works concerns. City officials see this as a critical step toward strengthening documentation, increasing responsiveness, and improving service delivery.

Attention then turned to the broader state of Prichard’s infrastructure. Mayor Davis requested a City Council resolution authorizing a comprehensive, citywide technical infrastructure assessment. The proposed assessment would catalog and evaluate streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, ADA accessibility needs, equipment, and operational systems. Expected to take several months, the process would help the City prioritize repairs based on health and safety, guide responsible budgeting, improve transparency, and create the records needed for long-term planning and successful pursuit of grant funding.

Public safety remained front and center throughout the meeting. Prichard Police Chief Walter Knight addressed ongoing reports of illegal gunfire within city limits and the toll these incidents take on residents’ sense of security. Mayor Davis and several City Council members discussed options for stronger enforcement, clearer communication about consequences, and continued efforts to build community partnerships that support prevention and encourage reporting.

City officials emphasized that these discussions reflect an ongoing commitment to improving safety, accountability, and quality of life for all Prichard residents.
