Montgomery, Alabama (BuzzReport) – Former Senator Doug Jones officially launched his campaign for Alabama Governor on Monday, filing the necessary paperwork with the Alabama Secretary of State’s office to establish a principal campaign committee. Running as a Democrat, Jones’s entry immediately reshapes the political landscape for the 2026 election cycle. The campaign committee’s formation names April Hodges of Red Clay Strategies Political Consulting Firm as the campaign treasurer, while veteran political strategist Doug Turner will serve as chairman. This experienced team signals a serious and organized bid for the state’s top office. Jones previously represented Alabama in the United States Senate from 2018 to 2021. His initial victory, a special election against former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore, was a notable upset. Despite Moore’s long history of controversies within the state and national allegations of sexual assault, Jones secured a narrow win, garnering approximately 50% of the statewide vote and beating Moore by a margin of 1.7%. That triumph marked a historic moment, as Jones became the first Democrat to win a statewide office in Alabama in nearly a decade, a feat last achieved by Lucy Baxley in 2008 when she was elected to head the Alabama Public Service Commission. The announcement of Jones’s candidacy has already provoked a strong reaction from Republicans across Alabama and in Washington. Opponents have responded with intense criticism, leveling various accusations against the well-respected former senator, whose political approach is distinct from the Republican party and the politics associated with former President Donald Trump. Jones’s campaign is poised to leverage his proven ability to raise significant funds and effectively disseminate his message across the state. His experience running against formidable opponents, including Senator Tommy Tuberville in his previous Senate bid, provides a strategic advantage. Tuberville, who is currently seen as the frontrunner in the Republican gubernatorial primary, is often characterized as desiring to rubber-stamp President Donald Trump’s policies within Alabama. Critics suggest Tuberville lacks a clear and independent leadership plan for the state, instead advocating for policies and leadership that could foster increased division. Jones stands as the most prominent Democrat to join the gubernatorial race. On the Republican side, Senator Tuberville remains the leading candidate, despite facing competition from insurance agent Ken McFeeters. The Democratic primary field is also taking shape, with Jones running alongside repeat Alabama political hopeful Will Boyd, Montgomery political figure Ja’Mel Brown, teacher Yolanda Flowers, and hemp business owner Chad Chig Martin. Voters will head to the polls for the primary election on May 19, 2026, with the general election scheduled for November 3, 2026. The coming months are expected to see intense campaigning as candidates vie for the opportunity to lead Alabama.
