Marshall County, AL (BuzzReport)- A joint law enforcement operation specifically targeting child sex predators in Guntersville culminated Sunday with the fatal shooting of a suspect. Deputies from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Guntersville Police Department were involved in the incident, which saw the suspect, identified as Jack Andrew Smiley, 27, of Muncie, Indiana, fatally wounded after resisting arrest and presenting a weapon.

The contentious encounter unfolded on Sunday, November 23, in the 500 Block of Warrenton Shores Road. Law enforcement personnel were conducting the coordinated child sex predator operation when confronted with Smiley’s resistance. The suspect reportedly attempted to flee the scene. During the confrontation, Smiley subsequently displayed a weapon, leading to gunfire from officers. He was pronounced deceased at the location.

Following the incident, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office requested the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) to launch an independent inquiry. SBI Special Agents initiated their investigation that very day. Two officers sustained minor injuries during the course of events and received on-site medical attention.

The comprehensive investigation by the SBI is actively underway. Upon its completion, all findings and evidence will be submitted to the Marshall County District Attorney’s Office for review. No further details about the ongoing investigation are currently available.
