MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (BuzzReport)– The race for 2026 is officially on for Democratic hopefuls in Marshall County. The Marshall County Democratic Executive Committee has set the qualifying period for candidates seeking a spot on the 2026 Democratic Primary ballot, marking an early start to what party leaders anticipate will be a pivotal election cycle.

Aspiring Democratic candidates can begin the qualifying process on Monday, January 5, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., aligning with the state Democratic Party’s schedule. The window for qualification will close on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., adhering strictly to Alabama election law.

For those vying for crucial county-level positions, the qualification process will be handled locally. Candidates must qualify directly with Marshall County Democratic Chairwoman Susan McKenney. The county ballot includes a range of vital roles that directly impact local governance and community life:

  • Sheriff
  • Coroner
  • Revenue Commissioner
  • County Commission Chair
  • County Commissioners
  • County School Board Members for Districts One and Four
  • County Superintendent

Additionally, individuals seeking a four-year term on the Marshall County Democratic Executive Committee will also qualify through the local committee.

The qualifying fee for county ballot positions has been set at one percent of the annual salary of the respective office. Candidates for the county Democratic Executive Committee face a qualifying fee of $50.00. Candidates aiming for broader electoral reach, including state legislative and party roles, will qualify through the Alabama Democratic Party’s official channels. The state party’s qualifying fee is two percent of the annual salary of the position, with SDEC candidates potentially required to pay a $50.00 qualifying fee.

Susan McKenney, who not only chairs the Marshall County Committee but also leads the Alabama Democratic County Chairs’ Association, highlighted the party’s proactive approach. “Hundreds of Democratic candidates across the state have already declared, trained, and begun campaigning since late Spring,” McKenney stated, underscoring the early momentum building within the party.

McKenney expressed optimism about the upcoming contests. “The present political landscape is being seen as an excellent opportunity for Democrats to run and win.
