Montgomery, AL (BuzzReport)– Aspiring Democratic candidates for the 2026 election cycle can officially begin their journey toward the ballot box on Monday, January 5, 2026. The Alabama Democratic Party (ADP) will open its candidate qualifying period at 9:00 AM, providing a defined window for individuals to formally declare their intentions to run for office. The period will conclude on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 5:00 PM.

The ADP is prioritizing accessibility and efficiency for this year’s qualifying process. A fully online qualification option will be available through the party’s official website, aldemocrats.org. Comprehensive instructions detailing how to navigate the digital submission will be published on the website concurrently with the opening of the qualifying period on January 5th.

While the online portal is the strongly recommended method for prospective candidates, the Alabama Democratic Party Headquarters will also accommodate in-person submissions. Individuals choosing this route are advised to consult the party’s website for specific operating hours during the qualifying window.

Candidates seeking to represent the Democratic Party in a significant number of statewide and legislative races will finalize their qualification directly with the ADP. This includes potential contenders for the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and the state’s top legal and administrative positions: Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, State Auditor, and Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries.

Furthermore, those vying for seats in the State Senate and State House of Representatives, all positions on the State Board of Education up for election in 2026 (Seats 2, 4, 6, and 8), and judicial roles including Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (Places 7, 8), Court of Civil Appeals Judge (Places 4, 5), and Court of Criminal Appeals Judge (Places 4, 5) will also qualify through the state party.

The qualifying period also extends to candidates for Circuit Court Judge, District Court Judge, District Attorney, and Public Service Commission seats (Places 1, 2). Additionally, members of the State Democratic Executive Committee (SDEC) looking to qualify will do so through the ADP.

It is important for candidates seeking offices not listed as qualifying with the state party to confirm their respective county party’s qualifying procedures and deadlines, which must also be met by January 23, 2026.
