Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – The Mobile City Council moved to solidify the leadership of the city’s critical public safety sector Tuesday, confirming two pivotal appointments to Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis’ cabinet. Barry Glisson will head the Mobile Fire-Rescue department as its new chief, while Curtis Graves steps into the role of Public Safety Director, with both bringing decades of experience within city government to their new posts.

The appointments signal Mayor Cheriogotis’s intent to place seasoned veterans at the helm of departments crucial to the city’s well-being, particularly as his administration prioritizes enhanced public safety.

Barry Glisson, who began his career as a fire-medic 21 years ago, takes the reins of Mobile Fire-Rescue. Glisson expressed his commitment to upholding the department’s high standards of service. He will also be instrumental in developing a comprehensive plan to modernize and improve how Mobile responds to 911 calls, a strategic initiative expected to streamline emergency services across the city.

Curtis Graves, known for holding a variety of public safety roles throughout his distinguished career, has been tapped to direct overarching public safety efforts. Graves indicated his approach would focus on building upon existing successes, stating he “wants to do more of what has proven successful.” His immediate and primary task will be to spearhead the city’s crime-fighting initiatives, a mandate directly from Mayor Cheriogotis, who has identified crime reduction as his top priority.

However, the change in leadership is met with a degree of caution by some residents. “As a lifelong citizen of Mobile, I just don’t have confidence in this new administration, it will continue to be the same ole same ole, with empty promises,” remarked James McRae of Mobile, reflecting a skeptical perspective on the potential for significant shifts.

With Glisson poised to refine emergency response and Graves tasked with leading the charge against crime, the newly confirmed directors face the twin challenges of meeting the administration’s ambitious goals and building public trust for a safer, more responsive Mobile.
