Montgomery, AL (BuzzReport)—Alabama families relying on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can breathe a sigh of immediate relief. The Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) confirmed Thursday that full November allotments are being issued immediately following the reopening of the federal government, ensuring households impacted by the congressional shutdown receive their overdue benefits without delay.

The action follows a directive issued to state agencies early Thursday morning. DHR announced it received notification from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) that the federal government had officially reopened. The FNS order explicitly stated that, “State agencies must take immediate steps to ensure households receive their full November allotments promptly.”

DHR acted swiftly to comply with the federal mandate. As of Thursday, DHR is transmitting the necessary files to the Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card vendor to begin placing allotments on the cards of clients whose regular issuance date has already passed, as well as those who were approved as November applicants. Benefits are expected to be available today after the initial processing of the files is completed, provided there are no unforeseen problems.

Governor Ivey Slams Congressional “Recklessness”

While celebrating the restoration of benefits, Governor Kay Ivey wasted no time in criticizing the congressional impasse that led to the economic uncertainty for Alabama residents.

“It is about time Congress did their job to reopen the federal government,” Governor Ivey stated firmly. “In Alabama, SNAP recipients were some of the most impacted during the shutdown period, and I am pleased that DHR will work to quickly provide normal, full benefits.”

Ivey delivered a sharp critique of the political dysfunction in Washington, contrasting it directly with state operations. “Our state government in Alabama, as well as our local governments, do not operate in such a reckless way, and I hope Congress has learned from their failure to meet their responsibility to the people across the country,” she added.

Immediate Availability Confirmed

For those individuals expecting immediate payment, DHR has confirmed that the priority remains those who missed their regular issuance dates during the lapse in federal funding.

Recipients whose issuance date is November 14 or later should receive benefits on their regular, scheduled day of the month, as DHR processes the backlog and transitions back to the standard issuance calendar.
