MOBILE, AL—A dramatic police pursuit involving a stolen vehicle brought traffic to a standstill Tuesday morning when the chase culminated in a destructive crash on the heavily traveled Government Boulevard, leading to the arrest of a 24-year-old Mobile man.

The incident began at approximately 11:35 a.m. on Tuesday, November 4th, when the Mobile Police Department received a report of grand theft auto. According to official reports, a male subject entered and drove away with a vehicle located in the 3800 block of Isabel Way.

Officers quickly broadcasted a description of the stolen car, and patrol units were able to spot the vehicle only moments later near the junction of Lansdowne Drive and Government Boulevard.

Refusal to Yield Triggers Pursuit

When officers attempted a felony stop, the driver refused to yield, accelerating and initiating a dangerous, brief pursuit that stretched across several blocks of the popular Mobile thoroughfare. Due to the high volume of mid-day traffic, the pursuit posed immediate risks to public safety.

The high-stakes chase came to an abrupt end in the 4100 block of Government Boulevard. The subject suddenly veered off the road and attempted to cut through a vacant lot, where he lost control of the stolen vehicle. The car plowed into a tree at high speed, effectively disabling the vehicle and ending the flight.

The impact caused significant damage to the vehicle and allowed officers to immediately apprehend the suspect. The driver was identified as Romane Proctor, 24.

Proctor was taken into custody without further incident and was transported to Metro Jail, where he was booked on charges stemming from the pursuit and the initial theft.

Authorities have commended the swift response and actions of the patrol units, noting that the incident was resolved quickly despite the public risks of the midday chase.

The Mobile Police Department confirmed that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the vehicle theft and the pursuit remains active at this time. Further charges are pending as investigators process the scene and gather additional details.
