MOBILE, AL (BuzzReport) – A correctional officer was assaulted and stabbed by an inmate Friday morning while performing duties at the Mobile Metro Jail, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

The incident occurred as Corrections Officer Tyler Simms was distributing breakfast trays to inmates within a housing unit. During the service routine, inmate Jeremiah Jackson, 31, allegedly attacked the officer, inflicting a stab wound to the chest area.

The weapon used in the attack was determined by investigators to be an improvised blade, or “shank,” that Jackson had manufactured while confined within the facility.

Officer Simms was immediately transported to a local hospital for necessary medical attention. Doctors determined the injuries were not life-threatening, and the officer was treated and subsequently released.

Jackson was already incarcerated at the facility facing multiple charges, including counts of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and failure to obey. Following the assault, the Sheriff’s Office initiated a formal investigation. Authorities expect to levy additional felony charges against Jackson upon the completion of this inquiry. The investigation remains ongoing as officials review security procedures and circumstances surrounding the procurement and use of the makeshift weapon.
