Mobile,Al (BuzzReport)– What began as a brazen vehicle theft at a popular local grocery store rapidly escalated into an armed robbery Thursday evening when accomplices intervened, pulling a firearm on the vehicle owner who attempted to stop the crime. Police confirmed responding to the Culture Food Mart, located at 446 Azalea Road, at approximately 7:00 p.m. following reports of a robbery. Upon arrival, officers determined that a male subject had successfully stolen a vehicle, but only after a frightening confrontation involving two additional assailants. The incident unfolded as the vehicle owner noticed the suspect attempting to drive away in their car. Sources indicate the victim attempted to physically stop the thief from leaving the parking lot. This intervention, however, triggered a shocking response from two individuals who had been waiting near the rear of the business. According to the official report, the two individuals rushed forward and confronted the victim. One of the assailants produced a handgun and pointed it directly at the owner, issuing a threat that allowed the primary subject to gain enough time and space to drive the stolen vehicle out of the area. “This was not a spontaneous crime; it was a highly coordinated and deliberate act of aggression,” said Lieutenant Sarah Jenkins of the responding precinct, speaking on the condition of anonymity as the investigation is active. “The immediate threat of deadly force used to secure the stolen property elevates this far beyond simple grand theft auto.” The two armed accomplices fled the scene on foot immediately after the stolen vehicle disappeared, running from the Azalea Road area before officers could arrive. The stolen vehicle was located abandoned a short time later, roughly four miles away in the 4100 block of Yorkshire Lane. Detectives are currently processing the recovered vehicle for forensic evidence and reviewing surveillance footage from the busy shopping area, which is typically heavily trafficked by commuters and customers around 7:00 p.m. The victim was unharmed but was treated for shock at the scene. Authorities have not yet released descriptions of the three suspects involved in the incident. Police are urging any witnesses who were in the vicinity of the Culture Food Mart or the 4100 block of Yorkshire Lane between 6:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Thursday to come forward.
