Beloved USPS Worker Killed by Suspected Drunk Driver Fleeing Previous Crash in Harris County, Texas

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (BuzzReport)– A community in northwest Harris County is reeling from the tragic death of a beloved United States Postal Service worker, Steven Marks, who was killed Saturday afternoon when his postal truck was struck by a pickup truck driver allegedly fleeing the scene of a separate crash. The driver, Jose Humberto Romero, 48, has been charged with intoxication manslaughter, a felony charge upgraded due to a previous DWI conviction.

The devastating collision occurred in the 11700 block of Antoine Drive. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Romero was driving southbound at a “significant high rate of speed” after a minor incident further up the road. “It was a pretty violent crash that occurred,” a Harris County Sheriff’s Office sergeant stated. Witnesses described a scene of destruction: a completely destroyed mailbox, a damaged tree, and remnants of USPS tape scattered on the ground.

Sheriff’s deputies say Romero lost control of his vehicle while fleeing the initial minor crash, colliding into the rear of Marks’ postal truck as he delivered mail to residences. Authorities identified Romero as the pickup truck driver and confirmed his previous arrest for DWI in Harris County in 2023. Due to this prior conviction, the charge for intoxication manslaughter in Marks’ death was upgraded to a higher felony.
