Major Revitalization Project Approved for Mobile’s Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue

Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Mobile is set to undergo a dramatic $11.2 million transformation, following a unanimous vote by the Mobile City Council on Tuesday. The comprehensive overhaul, spanning from Butchers Lane to where Broad Street transitions into Beauregard Street, promises a safer, more modern, and flood-resilient corridor for residents and visitors alike.

The extensive project will address critical infrastructure both above and below the bustling street. Underground, an aging network of water and sewer pipes, along with gas lines, will be replaced – a move specifically designed to significantly reduce instances of flooding in the area.

Above ground, the change will be immediately visible. The road will be completely resurfaced and restriped, featuring clearly marked parking spots on the side. A dedicated bike lane will be introduced, alongside new sidewalks, creating a more accessible environment for pedestrians and cyclists. The street will also benefit from new, energy-efficient street lights and updated traffic signals, enhancing safety and flow.

City officials confirm the 1.2-mile route will commence construction on its northern end, near the entrance to the Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail. This strategic enhancement is intended to bolster a Mobile County Commission initiative focused on establishing a “Civil Rights and Cultural Heritage District” in the vicinity.

“Obviously, having a walkable, bikeable city is very important to the city for safety purposes,” said a city representative, emphasizing the multi-faceted benefits of the project. “But also being able to share the road with cars and have safe driving, as well.”

The significant financial undertaking will largely be covered by external funding sources. A substantial grant from a fund established with fines paid after the Gulf oil spill, a U.S. Transportation Department grant, and contributions from the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) will cover the majority of the costs.

Final state approval for the project is anticipated before the end of the year. Once construction begins, it is expected to last 18 months, with work carefully managed to shut down only one lane at a time to minimize disruption.

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm by local residents. “This is a much needed project to enhance our community like other communities west of I-65,” remarked a longtime resident of the area, highlighting the positive impact this revitalization is expected to have on the surrounding neighborhoods.
