MONTGOMERY, AL (BuzzReport) – A night of downtown activity turned into a horrific scene of violence late Saturday, leaving two people dead and a dozen more wounded after guns erupted into a large crowd near Bibb and Commerce Streets. Montgomery Mayor and Police Chief Jim Graboys held an urgent Sunday afternoon news conference, painting a grim picture of an investigation into a mass shooting that claimed the lives of a teenager and an adult woman, and left five victims fighting for their lives. Jeremiah Morris, 17, and Shalanda Williams, 43, both believed to be Montgomery residents, were identified as the fatalities in the 11:30 p.m. incident. Their deaths mark a tragic toll in an event that also saw twelve other individuals shot, with the number of critically injured victims rising from three to five by Sunday noon. Seven others are being treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. “This investigation, we are laser-focused on, and we are not going to let anything distract us from going after the individuals responsible,” Chief Graboys stated with resolve, emphasizing the city’s commitment to justice. Youth Hit Hardest The devastating impact of the shooting is particularly felt among Montgomery’s youth. Chief Graboys revealed that half of the victims are under the age of 20, with the youngest person shot being just 16 years old. Baptist Medical Center South confirmed treating seven victims, one of whom tragically died, three remain in critical condition, and two are stable. One victim was treated and released. The locations of other victims are currently unknown. Targeted Attack Escalates into Chaos While a definitive motive remains under investigation, Chief Graboys indicated that the violence likely began with gunfire targeting one individual within the large gathering. The situation, however, quickly spiral ed into widespread chaos. Authorities believe that some members of the crowd, including at least two of the eventual victims, were also armed and returned fire, contributing to the escalating gun battle. Investigators have recovered multiple weapons from the scene, noting the use of various calibers and high-capacity magazines, underscoring the intense and indiscriminate nature of the shooting. “Every weapon has to be accounted for and processed,” Graboys added, highlighting the meticulous work underway. Rapid Response Amidst the Carnage The mayor confirmed that police units were remarkably close – within 50 feet – when the shooting began. Chief Graboys elaborated, stating that at least five officers in the immediate vicinity heard the gunfire and ran directly into the fray. Numerous other units, including the chief himself, rapidly responded to the scene, which quickly transformed into a sprawling crime scene. Massive Multi-Agency Manhunt Underway The search for those responsible is a monumental undertaking, involving a vast coalition of law enforcement agencies. The Montgomery Police Department is receiving extensive assistance from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney’s Office, Alabama Capitol Police, the Alabama Fusion Center, and federal partners. This formidable team includes the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Chief Graboys confirmed that investigators have brought in multiple individuals for questioning. However, he declined to specify if any of those being interviewed are considered suspects, or to release any suspect descriptions at this early, sensitive stage of the investigation as teams sift through a large volume of evidence and leads. Authorities are urging anyone with information, no matter how minor it may seem, to come forward.
