Mobile Fortifies Defenses: City Earns Coveted StormReady® Designation from National Weather Service

MOBILE, AL (BuzzReport) – In a landmark move solidifying its unwavering commitment to public safety, the City of Mobile has proudly joined the National Weather Service’s prestigious StormReady® Program. This significant accreditation marks a proactive and comprehensive stride in safeguarding residents, visitors, and vital infrastructure against the serious threats posed by severe weather events.

The voluntary StormReady® designation recognizes communities that have gone above and beyond to prepare for hazardous weather. For Mobile, a city all too familiar with the powerful forces of nature, this means an enhanced and formalized hazardous weather plan, improved communication systems, rigorous public awareness campaigns, and extensive training for emergency management personnel. While our picturesque coastal city remains susceptible to everything from hurricanes and tropical storms to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, this program ensures Mobile is not just reacting, but optimally positioned to mitigate impact and protect lives.

The StormReady® Program, which began in 2000, allows local jurisdictions to earn recognition by meeting stringent guidelines developed in partnership with federal, state, and local emergency management officials. Mobile’s Office of Resilience and Sustainability, a key part of the Department of Public Safety, has spearheaded the effort to strengthen and refine the city’s emergency preparedness framework, ensuring every aspect of its hazardous weather plan meets these rigorous national standards.

Being StormReady® doesn’t render Mobile immune to the effects severe weather can bring. Instead, it serves as a powerful declaration that the City of Mobile is exceptionally prepared to handle such events, equipped with improved communication, a robust warning system, and an informed public.

The official welcome into the StormReady® Program will be celebrated publicly on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, during the regularly scheduled Mobile City Council meeting. National Weather Service representatives will be on hand to formally recognize Mobile’s achievement, a testament to its dedication to building a safer, more resilient future.
