Walker County, AL (BuzzReport) A recent indictment has brought to light disturbing allegations of abuse and neglect at the Walker County Jail in Jasper, Alabama. Several employees, including Arcelia Tidwell, Dayton Wakefield, Robert Madison, Daniel Vickery, Jacob Edwards, and Richard Holtzman, have been charged with violating the rights of at least six inmates.

The Death of Anthony “Tony” Mitchell

One of the most egregious cases involves the death of 33-year-old Anthony “Tony” Mitchell, who died on January 26, 2023, after being subjected to inhumane conditions at the jail. Mitchell was arrested on January 12, 2023, following a welfare check and was allegedly denied food, clothing, shelter, sanitation, and medical care. According to reports, Mitchell’s body temperature had plummeted to 72 degrees Fahrenheit when he was finally taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Walker County Coroner attributed his death to “medical neglect”.

Allegations of Abuse and Neglect

The indictment accuses the jail employees of various forms of abuse and neglect, including:

  • Physical Assault: Holtzman allegedly assaulted a 38-year-old detainee, causing severe injuries, while Wakefield reportedly beat a handcuffed inmate.
  • Encouraging Violence: Tidwell and Holtzman are accused of offering “free-world” food to a 43-year-old detainee to assault an 18-year-old pre-trial detainee.
  • Cover-up: Tidwell and Holtzman allegedly provided a false letter to a sentencing court, attesting to the 43-year-old detainee’s peaceful character.

Guilty Pleas and Investigation

In related news, former correctional officer Joshua Conner Jones pleaded guilty to federal charges related to Mitchell’s death, admitting that he and other officers conspired to deny Mitchell medical care and subjected him to inhumane conditions. The investigation has exposed a culture of abuse and neglect at the Walker County Jail, highlighting broader systemic issues within Alabama’s correctional facilities.
